Swan Mama and Baby, Ceramic Leaf Dish with Swan and Cygnet on Sparkling Pond
In this ceramic heart-shaped jewelry dish, a single baby swan is riding on mom's back while she swims in a sparkling pond. Mother swans are very protective of their babies and stay with them for many months as they grow. Swans mate for life and the fathers also care for the young swans - the babies often ride on the father's back as well. Swan babies are called cygnets. Cygnets are fluffy and gray (remember the "Ugly Duckling" fairytale..... the duckling was actually a baby swan....but they are actually quite cute!)
The "pond" is a heart shaped leaf, pressed into clay. I love the dappled blend of turquoise and blues, dotted with accents of real gold. After I press the leaf into clay, I cut the leaf out and form the curved shape. Once the clay leaf dish has firmed up a bit, I create the little swan sculpture out of the same clay and join it to the dish. Then I slowly dry the piece. Once dry, I fire the piece in my kiln to a low temperature. This preliminary firing (called the bisque firing) hardens the clay so that it can be handled. Then I apply the colors and glaze, followed by a second and higher temperature firing (this one over 2200 F). Real 22kt gold accents are applied by hand and the piece is kiln fired a third time to melt and bond the gold. It's a labor intensive process with unique results.
The leaf is approximately 7 inches long and 6 inches wide. Please allow slight variations and imperfections which make these handmade sculptures as unique as a fingerprint.
