Large Hummingbirds with Agapanthus Flower
Agapanthus is a very popular flower here in San Diego and I love seeing them bloom - they are like the fireworks display of the garden! I use real agapanthus flowers and leaves to create this piece. Here three hummingbirds are paired with a purple agapanthus flower. Each hummingbird is in a different pose as they all hover around the flower, and the view of the flower and leaves is from above and how I imagine the hummingbirds see it. Hummingbirds are a beautiful symbol of positivity, joy, and freedom. They sparkle with light as they dart around gardens like tiny fairies. I also love how feisty they are - if you have hummingbirds in your garden you probably know that they are quite spirited and brave as well!
This ceramic dish is made from smooth porcelain-like stoneware clay, dried, bisque fired, glazed, and high-fired once more at approximately 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. The glaze is a glossy warm white with the beauty of a kiln-fired ceramic, showing off the intricate detail of the handpainted flowers. Read 22kt gold is applied to the to the hummingbirds and the dish and then kiln-fired a third time to bond the gold to the piece. It is a labor intensive process that is worth the extra step. This particular piece features an effect I don't too often -an iridescent mother-of-pearl luster on the flowers. It is also a kiln-fired finish.
Measurements: Approximately 9 inches wide
These pieces are individually made by hand from start to finish, and slight variations and organic shapes are what makes them perfectly unique. Each one is a little bit different because they are each pressed from a real flower and then sculpted by hand.
